The form is relatively simple with the exception of the north side, this is the result of an intensive analysis of the environment, in the site plan immediately recognizable, influenced by the shape / structure of the neighboring buildings. in the South the building is defined trough the outside. The new part is created to support the Moviestudios in its town planning structure, here are two alignements immediately recognizable, one on the south side and the other at the main entrance. To the east a distance is kept to let more light and air to the elongated building (Section N) , “to respect neighbors.” Three sides are the mere result of a reaction to the environment, in the courtyard side, the north side, the rigid and regular facade “blows up” into a symphony which is developed by its internal functions and becomes an icon of the campus. On this page you find all the important areas, as the north side is protected and therefore best suited for acoustics. We had from the beginning the feeling that this campus needs a main character, a building with a strong soul, which right away becomes log/icon a recognition value of this campus.
Our building avoids a fashionable architectural language on the opposite, our aim is to create a timeless building. For this reason, we develop a project that looks like a monolith. Consequently, we have developed a regular grid for the façade, we put the structure on the outside to create a smooth-faced concrete facade. We believe that a monolithic material such as concrete for an institution like the University is the right choice. The facade is an interpretation of the piano which you can relate to all performing arts, in a simplified form. From the outside the building seems austere and at the same time dramatic and iconic, it respects the other buildings, and like to draw attention to itself. The building is at once extremely friendly and reclaims the communication, the views from top to bottom and back. We are simply convinced that an educational institution must be built as an atrium with lots of natural light. The heart of the building is the double staircase as connection and meeting for the people, almost like an internal “Spanish Steps”. From this inner element you also reach the terrace that can be utilized for special events during the summer. Also, because this property was presented as a green meadow and it was important for us to return this outer surface part. Another important element is the names on the parapet , we make the glass railing with the names of the most important personalities of Vienna who have a relation to music or performing arts, a kind of “Wall of Fame” so that every student understands the importance of Austrian tradition in this field.
